How the Gravel Calculator Works
The calculator multiplies area by depth, then adds the selected waste allowance to produce adjusted order volume.
It multiplies adjusted cubic feet by bulk density and divides pounds by 2,000 to estimate U.S. short tons.
Formula
Gravel tons = Area (ft²) × Depth (ft) × (1 + Waste %) × Density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000
Example
A 40 ft by 10 ft driveway layer at 4 inches deep has 133.33 ft³ of raw volume. With 10% waste and 105 lb/ft³ density, the estimate is 5.43 yd³ or 7.70 tons.
- For a driveway, path, drainage layer, or landscape bed, use the specified gravel depth and your supplier’s density when available.
- Compacted base quantities can differ from loose delivered volume and may require a project-specific compaction factor.
- Aggregate type, size distribution, moisture, and supplier loading methods affect bulk density.
- Geotextile, excavation, edging, delivery, labor, equipment, and supplier minimums are not included.
